ZOMBIES ANONYMOUS
DVD - Insane-o-Rama - region 1
rating: **********
Getting to see that Day Of The Dead remake, made me decide on laying it low for zombie movies for a while. Taking life and things for granted, peeking out what comes onto my obsessive movie path, but recently i do did ran into this small independent horror zombie flick called 'Zombies Anonymous'.
With no expectations at all, I decided to give this one a go, and just get into it.
Angela gets killed by her abusive and paranoid boyfriend, and while she is being left for dead in a bloody bathroom, she gets 'mortally changed' which means they're being zombified aka becoming part of the living dead. Angela becomes a zombie and carries her killing wounds with her, on a new 'mortally changed' life. A life among the living, a life and world in which zombies take a certain place within this living society.
However the zombies differ from such as zombies in Day Of The Dead or Night Of The Living Dead, in this movie they all still have their feelings, thoughts and are conscious with their emotions. So called humanly functioning zombies who still have the same feelings before, and after they got "mortally changed".
Angela has to face a new way of life through het transformation, in which she have to deal with new problems such as trying to resist the taste of human flesh, loses her job, and the efforts she 's taking to still lead a normal human life, while facing new discriminations.
It's funny, because even as humans Angela decides to join a support zombie group to deal with her new way of life together with other fellow zombified dead living people. It's just great to see how such a small independent zombie flick manages it, to come up with some new refreshing ideas in the wasteland of zombie moviemaking.
Everything gets a nasty turn as her ex-boyfriend decides to join a small group of volunteers lead by a commanding semi chick who leads a killing rampage on zombies, to kill hack and lynch all zombies in their way, leaving a bloody path of hacked up heads and splattered out brains. The whole movie gets a bloody turn when the ex-boyfriend finally finds out Angela has been "mortally changed" and decides to go for a second round of payback, hunting her and her fellow zombies down.
The whole movie starts out interesting. With a good start of the story and touches of black comedy thrown in, i couldn'tfigure out yet if this was either going to be a serious movie or not, it does do have a gripping theme on discrimination and abuse, again zombified people, them being the lower caste of humanity in a living society.
It definitely gets you thinking about zombies and how they would fit into our society, and in this movie you'll come to a point where you just feel bad for them.
However the ending of the movie got me confused in some way, especially on the point of zombies killing other zombies, it was the most confusing part of the movie as alot of different things were happening in one place. Add up a shitload of gore and blood many action sequences. I was kind of scared that everything was gonna spiral down, but the movie got on its feets again where Angela gets her final revenge. Good shit.
Zombies Anonymous is one surprisingly good independent horror zombie flick. The acting overall, is very good , the cinematography is excellent and throughout the movie you seem to forget how indie this movie actually is. Enough gore and blood to keep the action going, combined with an interesting storyline.
While I always used to stay away from these indie horror flicks this one definitely sparked my interest to check out more often an indie horror flick. Worth checking out zombie horror flick. Especially if you're looking for something different. I was into this.
ZAA lead: Have a donut!
Angela : Nah, it's okay, Donuts make me puke!
ZAA lead : They make us all puke. Have one anyway!
Angela : So...exactly why are we eating donuts, when they all make us sick?
Zaa Lead: Because...that's what normal people do after their bleedings.
